As it’s Ramadan I thought this was a good story to post.
.
I took this photo from an article in The Guardian:
.
‘Men deny us equality, not the Qur’an: a female Islamic judge in India speaks out’.
.
about Jahanara the first female Kazis in Jaipur (A Kazis is an Islamic spiritual leader who is trained in knowledge of the Qur’an they adjudicate over domestic issues using scripture ) .
.
Jahanara’s story is incredible – she was abused by her husband and sought justice in her community through her faith but was dismissed by the male Kazis – feeling that this dismissal did not fit with her concept of her faith she trained to be her own Kazis and is now helping Muslim women and men all over the city! .
She is truly extraordinary. .
As a side not Jahanara now only goes by her first name – after she left her husband she abandoned his name and decided not to take another. I find that extremely cool! (Link to full article below).
